Child reminder system
A system that forces the driver to walk to the rear of the vehicle and confirm no child was left on board. We supply and install the Child Check-Mate System, including the rear-zone button.

A 7D vehicle is held to a stricter standard than any ordinary passenger van, and the standards are checked every six months. We service 7D vehicles against the Massachusetts vehicle and equipment rules — the seating and weight limits, the required equipment, and the semiannual inspection list — so your route is not interrupted by a rejection.

Massachusetts regulates school pupil transport under M.G.L. c. 90, § 7D, with the current rules in effect since July 1, 2020. Six requirements decide whether a van qualifies — and every one of them is checked at registration and at inspection.
Maximum 11 seats including the operator. The vehicle may carry no more than 8 passengers in addition to the operator — a maximum of 9 occupants. A monitor counts as one of those 8 passengers.
Must be a passenger vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 lb or less. Anything heavier is rejected at inspection.
Every 7D vehicle with a model year of 2018 or newer must have a child reminder system installed and in working order.
Both sides must visibly display the company name, city or town, and state, in lettering at least two inches high and in a contrasting color.
A 7D safety inspection is required every six months at an RMV-licensed Safety Inspection Station, with a 7D sticker issued. The annual Certificate of Inspection, registration, and pupil plates must also be current.
All tires must have a minimum tread depth of 4/32 inch — deeper than the 2/32 standard that applies to ordinary passenger cars.
Pre-trip inspections are run against this list, and an RMV auditor can ask to see it. An empty bracket, a discharged extinguisher, or a kit that was used and never restocked takes the vehicle off the road just as surely as a failed brake.

Rated 2A10BC or higher and fitted with a hose, mounted securely and accessible to the driver from the seat.

Three collapsible warning triangles, stowed so they can be set out at a breakdown or roadside stop.

A spill kit for bloodborne pathogen clean-up, kept stocked and stored within reach of the passenger area.

A stocked first aid kit, checked at pre-trip so nothing has been used up and not replaced.

A dedicated belt cutter with a window glass breaker, mounted in a holder where the driver can reach it in an emergency — not loose in a console.

Two chock blocks for securing the vehicle during loading, unloading, or a roadside stop.

Required on wheelchair-accessible 7D vehicles for smothering a fire or shielding an evacuation.
An in-cab indicator that shows the driver when the exterior school bus lamps are active.

An audible alarm that sounds whenever the vehicle is in reverse, working reliably in wet and cold weather.

School bus signs and alternating flashing red signal lamps must meet the federal lighting standard, including correct actuation and mounting.

Measured in a major tread groove at the tire center — this is the single most common 7D rejection we see.
Product images are representative of each item type, not the exact part or brand fitted to your vehicle. Ask us for the specific equipment quoted on your repair order before it is installed.
The six-month inspection runs under 540 CMR 21.00. An inspector issues a 7D sticker, a rejection, or a defective equipment card — and a rejection means the vehicle sits until it is repaired and re-inspected. These are the items that fail most often.
Most shops will fix what you point at. On a 7D vehicle the list is defined by the regulation, so we work the list — then the mechanical repairs it turns up.
Child reminder systems, extinguishers and mounts, backup alarms, light indicators, and cab wiring — installed and tested, not just handed over the counter.
We work the 540 CMR 21.03 list before you go to the inspection station, so a worn belt or a marginal tire does not turn into a rejection and a lost week of routes.
Loaded vans eat brakes and front-end parts faster than cars. We measure, quote, and repair to keep the vehicle inside 7D tolerances.
School bus lamps, flashers, buzzer circuits, and charging systems traced and repaired so pre-trip checks pass.
Send us the vans one at a time and stay on route. We keep the service history per vehicle so the next inspection is not a scramble.
You can buy a single piece of equipment and have it installed, or hand us the whole vehicle and get it fully compliant in one visit. Either way the price is written down before we start.

Every six months. The 7D safety inspection under 540 CMR 21.00 is separate from the annual state inspection sticker and is performed at an RMV-licensed Safety Inspection Station, which issues the 7D sticker.
If the model year is 2018 or newer, yes. It has to be installed and working, and the driver has to use it at the end of every trip. We install the Child Check-Mate System with the rear-zone button.
One rated 2A10BC or greater, with a hose, mounted securely and accessible to the driver. A small automotive extinguisher without a hose does not satisfy the requirement.
Only on wheelchair-accessible 7D vehicles. If your vehicle carries a wheelchair or a lift, the blanket is required equipment.
Yes. We supply the required equipment and fit it in the shop, so the vehicle leaves compliant instead of leaving with a box of parts.
Equipment and installation are quoted per item or as a complete package, and inspection prep is quoted after we look at the vehicle. Item pricing and a package cost calculator are being added to this page — call the shop for a quote today.
Tell us the model year and what equipment is missing, and we will quote the work before you bring it in.
